KDE: how to setup a transparent window (VLC media player running a baby monitor)

You can use any old cheap IP camera as a baby monitor. Works great. You can view it from any computer, iPhone or Android phone. Even some TVs.

Having just installed KDE on Linux Mint I wanted the baby monitor running but didn’t want it blocking the desktop too much.

Turns out it’s really easy to set the window as transparent and ontop of all other windows. Right click the title bar and choose these options:

vlc_media_player_baby_monitor1

vlc_media_player_baby_monitor2

vlc_media_player_baby_monitor3

Then select View > Compact in the VLC menu.

To get the title bar menu back to change these options just press Alt+F3 when the window is focused.
